Welcome to Ahenny Books - What. Why. Who. How.
Thank you for having a look at my little musings on what I’ve been reading. I’m not going to give them the credibility of describing them as “reviews”. There’s no attempt here at objective criticism - just my personal response to the books. Hopefully, if you find something I’ve liked, that you’ve also liked, it might point you in the direction of other things I’ve liked but you may not have come across yet. As you’ll find out, Thrillers are my main thing - action or psychological - and while it’s mostly crime, I’m happier when the police characters are secondary. I’ve no real interest in series that follow detectives.
For reasons of eyesight (and vanity) I do most of my reading on a Kindle App. Because of that I’m often picking up novels at very low cost - and in truth I was often felt feeling I’d not paid enough. After contacting a number of my favourite authors, their advice was pretty consistent. If I want to show appreciation for their work I could gift physical copy to friends and write up some reviews of their work. And after gifting a few books last week, here we are…
I claim no expertise beyond an ability to read, and only really started reading extensively in the last year or so - helped by the switch to virtual “large print”. For many years I did something similar for Scottish Theatre at www.viewfromthestalls.co.uk but the arrival of a daughter knocked my theatre going on the head several years ago.
I’m planning on operating similar rules as I did for my theatre “reviews”. No free books will be accepted. As explained above - the whole idea of this is about giving something back - not taking. Any books commented on here will be chosen by me and paid for. I write about what I choose to read - I don’t read books so I can write about them. My thoughts will be short and spoiler free. Comments to my thoughts will be welcomed. Spam won’t be.
Oh yes, some of you my be wondering why "Ahenny"? For those of you who can guess, I'm truly impressed. I'm coming late to the party on this, so all the good names are already taken. But I was always fond of this from Douglas Adams & John Lloyd's "The Meaning of Liff" -
Seemed kind of appropriate.
